Eye-clean diamonds generally refer to diamonds that do not have any inclusions (marks) that are visible to the naked eye. This is an unofficial term and when it is used it generally refers to people who have normal eyesight viewing it at a distance of six to 12 inches.
When most people want to buy a diamond they don’t want to buy one that has obvious blemishes or be forced into spending more money when the inclusions can only be seen under magnification. Most diamonds graded VS1 or higher do not feature any inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.
A grading report alone cannot tell you whether a diamond will be eye-clean. For example, VS2 is a grade higher than SI1, but there is a chance that the higher-grade diamond could still have visible inclusions. If you buy a diamond that is graded VS1 or above with a proper certificate (GIA is best), it is unlikely to have any visible inclusions.
Also, the size and location of the inclusions will affect the overall look of a stone. If the marks are located such that they reflect throughout the stone the diamond will appear more blemished. If the inclusions are quite large or dark and near the centre of the stone, they will be too obvious to the naked eye.
