History of Radiant Cut diamonds

21st January 2024 By Coby Shalev

The radiant cut is a relatively modern diamond cut that was developed in the 1970s. It is a hybrid cut that combines the elegance of the emerald cut with the brilliance of the round brilliant cut. The radiant cut is characterised by its square or rectangular shape with cut corners, and it features a total of 70 facets, which contribute to its brilliance.

The creation of the radiant cut is often attributed to Henry Grossbard, a master diamond cutter who founded the Radiant Cut Diamond Company in 1977. Grossbard sought to create a diamond cut that would combine the best features of other popular cuts, such as the round brilliant and the emerald cut. The result was the radiant cut, which quickly gained popularity for its ability to showcase both brilliance and clarity.

Radiant cut diamonds are known for their versatility and ability to complement a variety of settings. They are often used in engagement rings and other fine jewellery. The cut has evolved over the years, with improvements in technology allowing for more precision in cutting and polishing, leading to even greater brilliance.

Radiant cut diamonds can be square or rectangular, and they may have a more squared-off or elongated appearance depending on the length-to-width ratio. The corners of the radiant cut can vary, with some having cut corners similar to an emerald cut, while others have slightly cropped corners.

As with any diamond cut, the quality of a radiant cut diamond is determined by factors such as color, clarity, and carat weight. The radiant cut has become a popular choice for those seeking a unique and eye-catching diamond that combines the best features of other classic cuts.
